(Austin, TX) — HB 90, the Bishop Evans Act, has officially been designated a priority bill by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dade Phelan. This bill seeks to guarantee workers’ compensation and death benefits for members of the Texas Military Forces serving on State Active Duty (SAD) status. State Representative Jared Patterson is grateful for the support of Speaker Phelan on this issue, as he works to guarantee that all who serve to protect Texas and the United States are entitled to necessary benefits.
The Bishop Evans act would increase the death benefit lumpsum payment to $500,000 for surviving family members, provide clarity surrounding mission related transportation, allow accelerated dispute times for workplace injuries, and include post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) coverage under workers’ compensation for all Texas Military Force members serving under State Active Duty. Following the creation of Operation Lone Star (OLS) to enforce further protection to the southernmost border, discrepancies have arisen from benefits on the national level differing from the state level with SAD. The tragic death of Sgt. Bishop Evans emphasized the disparity between the order status receiving different benefits.
“With Sergeant Bishop Evans service to his country and state on the southern border, I am honored that this bill is in remembrance of him and will protect all current and future members serving under State Active Duty orders.” states Rep. Patterson. “Speaker Phelan has continued to enforce the importance of securing our border and this act will ensure that those who are protecting our state, and its citizens, are guaranteed the rights they deserve.”
Jared Patterson represents House District 106, which encompasses the eastern portion of Denton County. During the 86th and 87th Legislative Session, Patterson authored and passed initiatives in policy areas such as transportation, education, property taxes, as well as eliminated unnecessary and burdensome government regulations. Patterson serves on the House Committees on Calendars, Licensing and Administrative Procedures, and Transportation. He also serves on the Texas Cybersecurity Council. His family resides in Frisco.
